Adherence to a lifestyle of not smoking; maintainig a body mass index of less than 25; exercising at a moderate to vigorous level for 30 minutes daily; eating mainly vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, whole grains, and fish; and consuming at least one alcoholic drink per day was associated with a lower risk of dying from a sudden cardiac event in a large group (over 81,000) of female nurses. Dr. Mozaffarian and his team of fellow scientists discovered that over time non-obese women and men gained more weight if they consumed potatoes, sugar-sweetened beverages, unprocessed red meats, processed meats, and refined grains; increased their daily alcohol intake; slept for less than six hours or more than eight hours per night; quit smoking; or spend more time watching television per hour per day. On the other hand, weight loss was associated with those who consumed diets mainly consisting of vegetables, whole grains, fruits, nuts, and yougart. Smokers were less likely to gain weight, but this could have been due to the effects of undiagnosed chronic diseases associated with smoking.
